Frequently Asked Questions

What does a theatre general manager do?

A theatre general manager oversees all financial and operational aspects of a production, including budgeting, cash flow management, contract negotiation, payroll, royalties, insurance, venue deals and company management. The GM is the commercial backbone of any production, working from first budget through to final settlement.

What is the difference between a general manager and a producer?

The producer is the creative and commercial entrepreneur who initiates and drives a production. The general manager is the operational specialist hired by the producer to manage the day-to-day financial and administrative running of the show. A producer decides what to make; a GM makes it work.

When should I hire a general manager for my production?

As early as possible. The ideal time is before any financial commitments are made. A GM can help structure the budget, negotiate initial deals and ensure the production starts on solid financial foundations. Bringing a GM in late often means inheriting problems that could have been avoided.

How much does a theatre general manager cost?

GM fees vary depending on the scale and complexity of the production. Fees are typically structured as a weekly fee during the production period, sometimes with an office charge. For West End and large-scale touring productions, GM fees are a standard line item in the production budget.

Do you work on Edinburgh Fringe productions?

Yes. We have managed multiple Edinburgh Fringe productions and understand the unique venue deal structures, compressed timelines, accommodation logistics and marketing rhythms that make Fringe producing different from London or touring work.

Can you help with Theatre Tax Relief claims?

Yes. We ensure productions are structured to qualify for Theatre Tax Relief from the outset, maintain the financial records required for claims, and work with your accountants to maximise the relief available. TTR can return a significant percentage of qualifying expenditure.

Do you handle international co-productions?

Yes. We manage international co-productions including UK-US transfers, multi-territory touring and cross-border producing arrangements. This includes multi-currency budgeting, international rights management and compliance with employment law across jurisdictions.
